Growing Thicker Eyebrows, Naturally!

My poor eyebrows are so thin...

This is going to be a challenge/experiment that I'll be doing for the month of April.  Join me if you'd like.  I got the idea from the sample of castor oil I got in the mail.  The info sheet it came with said that castor oil could be used to grow your eyebrows.  So i did further research, and found that many people do in fact use Castor Oil on their eyebrows and have seen a difference.  So every night of April, I will do the following routine taken from eHow.com:
  • Gently wash your eyebrows with a mild soap. Put a small dab of soap and water on a cotton ball and run it across each eyebrow. Pat the eyebrow dry with a sheet of facial tissue.

  • Dip one end of a cotton swab in castor oil. Tap the neck of the cotton swab against the sink one or two times to get rid of the extra oil.

  • Dab the cotton swab along your eyebrow, going in the direction of the hair.

  • Blot away excess castor oil with the dry end of the cotton swab.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cover your pillows with old pillow covers to prevent the castor oil from ruining them.
  • Apply the castor oil at night and leave it on until you wake up the next morning for maximum results.
  • Castor oil may not work on eyebrows that are thin due to aging.

In Search of...

I'm getting down to the last bit of my Carol's Daughter Hair Smoothie, so Ive been on a hunt for a new one.  Finally, I've narrowed it down to four products (in no particular order).  Below are my choices and how I rank them in various categories.

1. Proclaim Argan Oil Intense Hydrating Mask 16oz for $7.99

http://www.sallybeauty.com/argan-oil-masque/PROCLM37,default,pd.html?cm_vc=SEARCH
Ingredients: Good
Smell: Good
Price vs. Quantity: Good
User Reviews: Split
My thoughts: This is the only product that doesn't have an official website so I find that a little odd.  The reviews on this were somewhat split, so I'm not sure how to judge it.  I like to try things that are less popular and I've also been wanting to try a product with argan oil so perhaps I'll try the sample of this before making a decision...

2. Nothing But Intense Healing Mask 16oz for $10.99

http://www.sallybeauty.com/intense-healing-mask/SBS-890603,default,pd.html?cm_vc=SEARCH
Ingredients: Good
Smell: Iffy
Price vs. Quantity: Ok
User Reviews: Ok
My thoughts: I heard that this has a lemony/lime smell so that doesn't appeal to me much.  But again, this is something that I haven't heard much about so it peaks my interest...

3. Eden Body Works All Natural Deep Conditioner 16oz for $9.99

http://www.walmart.com/ip/EDEN-BodyWorks-JojOba-Monoi-All-Natural-Deep-Conditioner-16-fl-oz/21095648
Ingredients: Good
Smell: Iffy
Price vs. Quantity: Good
User Reviews: Mostly Good
My thoughts: Jojoba oil is another oil that I've been wanting to use and I've heard nothing but good things about this.  It has a tingly affect and I like that, but I've heard mixed reviews about the smell...

4. Beautiful Textures Rapid Repair Deep Conditioner 15oz for $6.89

http://www.sallybeauty.com/repair-deep-conditioner/SBS-370925,default,pd.html?cm_vc=SEARCH
Ingredients: Good
Smell: Good
Price v. Quantity: Good
User Reviews: Mostly Good
My thoughts: I know for a fact that I love one Beautiful Textures product so I would hope that this one would be no different.  I would like to try this, but if the consistency is anything like their moisture butter, I would prefer something a little thicker...

9 months Natural Today!

I don't know why this is sideways...
Today marks my 9 month BC anniversary.  I'll be doing an official length check next week since it will be check in time for the Castor Oil Challenge.  Any who, I decided to treat my hair.  To what? I have no idea.  It's just something I made up really fast.  I co-washed with TreSemme Naturals, and used castor oil to seal.  I was going to twist my hair up but I couldn't find my bouncy curls pudding so I gave up.  Instead, I applied some Oyin Sugar Berries Pomade because I read the lable and the first ingredient is castor seed oil.  Cool beans.  Then I slightly sprayed my hair with a mix of aloe vera juice and water, because my hair was drying.  Then for the heck of it, I rubbed some of my homemade shea butter mix on my hair and threw a baggy and a beanie on and called it a night.  There was absolutely no method to my madness and the only thing I was going for was soft hair in the morning.  We'll see...

Hair Tip: Beginner's Guide to Natural Hair Care!

Being a member of the Curly Nikki Hair Forum's I come across a lot of Transitioners and New Naturals who express the feelings of being overwhelmed, confused, and  consumed by the research they do of natural hair on the internet.  This post is for those people.  There is no need to fear, natural hair is not rocket science.  It's only as difficult as you make it. Of course there are some situations that need extra care and attention, but this is just for those who need a quick and easy understanding of what a hair regimen looks like.  First and foremost, understand that you can't inquire other people about YOUR hair and expect to get the correct answer.  Your hair is unique, so everyone's staple products/methods may or may not work for you.

I'm going to give you a crash course in hair care right now, by telling you what I believe are the 4 most important things you need to take care of your hair.  I basically do the minimum to take care of my hair and I am proud to say that it is very healthy.  So this is going to be simple and to the point. Just think of it as a foundation to start you off.  Keep in mind that the products I use are only suggestions for you (pictured below).  I can only tell you what needs to be achieved but you'll have to find your own way to get there, through trial and error.  Without further adieu the 4 things you need to do to achieve healthy hair in order of most important to least important are: Moisturize/Seal, Cleanse, Condition, and Style.  I'll throw in some asterisks of other methods to look into if what I've listed doesn't work for you.

1. Moisturize/Seal

Why it's important: Dry/Brittle hair is susceptible to breakage and damage, therefore length can't be retained.  So keep your hair hydrated.
How Often: Daily moisturizing as needed.
How it's done:  Moisturizing your hair can be done a number of ways.  The best moisturizer of all is water.  So one way to do it is to start by wetting your hair. You can either do this after washing your hair or just simply spraying it with water.  Next, apply an oil to your hair focusing on the ends to seal them (I skip this step).  There are many oils to choose from.  I suggest grapeseed or sweet almond oil.  Lastly, apply a water based product to your hair to complete the sealing process.  Water based simply means that water/aqua is the first ingredient listed on the label.
Sometimes I have a quick moisturizing session where I'll just apply a product to my dry hair and keep it moving.  It's sort of like a quick pick me up if my hair feels a little dry.  Just remember MOISTURE is key!
*LOC Method

2. Cleansing

Why it's important: I call it cleansing instead of shampooing because some people only use conditioner to wash their hair.  Whatever you use make sure you cleanse your scalp thoroughly. Hair grows from the scalp so keep it healthy and clean so it can thrive.
How Often: Either once a week or once every other week.
How it's done: If your hair is short, don't worry about sectioning.  Simply cleanse your hair is you would with relaxed hair.  If your hair is long, you can section your hair into large twists and wash your hair section by section in order to keep it from becoming tangled.
Along with cleansing goes something that I have yet to do.  Clarifying.  People have different ways to clarify their hair and scalp, but the most popular are ACV (apple cider vinegar) rinses and the bentonite clay method.  You'll have to do your own research on how to clarify because I don't do this to my hair.  Clarifying is just a more thorough cleansing.
*Curly Girl Method

3. Conditioning

Why it's important: Think of conditioning as a more intense form of daily moisturizing and sealing.  So whenever your hair is suffering from dryness or breakage, conditioning will help.
How often: This varies, I say deep condition either once a week or every other week.  And co-wash as needed.  I used to co-wash everyday but now its about 2-3 times a week.
How it's done: In order to deep condition (DC), you'll need heat.  It can be heat from steam, a hooded dryer, or just plain body heat.  Invest in plastic baggies or make sure you save the plastic bags you get from the store.  Apply a conditioner to your hair.  Preferably something that promotes itself as being a deep treatment.  After the conditioner is fully distributed in your hair, put on your plastic baggy.  For the heat, if you don't want to spend money on a steamer or hooded dryer, you can use the steam from your shower.  Or you can cover your head with a hat or scarf to let your body heat do the work.  Either way is acceptable.  Do this for about 15-30mins. then rinse.  Cowashing is simple.  Just wash your hair with conditioner as you would with shampoo.
*Protein Treatments, Hot Oil Treatments, Pre-Pooing

4. Styling

Why it's important: To look good of course! But its also good to protect your hair from over manipulation and cold/dry weather conditions.
How often: I style my hair about once a week.  Although some protective styles last a few months so styling isn't needed as often.
How it's done:  Now it's time for you to get creative.  Of course certain styles come with length so you may be limited in this category.  Coils can be done at just about every stage.  If your hair is long enough to add hair/yarn, try some braids or twists.  It's all up to you.  When styling your own hair, it can be done on wet, damp, or dry hair.  It's whatever you prefer.  Just make sure your hair is safely styled, meaning your edges aren't pulled too tightly for a long period of time.

Remember, when buying products start cheap, and don't get caught up in what ingredients people tell you to stay away from because they might work for you.  You'll learn what ingredients are best for you as time goes on.  Also, if you don't like a product you've used, try using it a different way.  For instance, I didn't like the deep treatment masque as a DC so I used it to twist my hair instead.  If that doesn't work try selling it/giving it to someone else.  Lastly, if it's not broke, don't fix it!  If you find a product that works for you, use it until its gone.  Then you can buy other things.  No need to be a product junkie!

I hope this was helpful and not overwhelming.  You may come across several different ways to take care of your hair, but in actuality, as long as your scalp is clean and your hair is moisturized, there is no wrong way to do it.  So use this as a guide, but find what works best for you!

Hair of the day: She called me, Curly Sue

This is the result of the twistout from my first night routine.  I quickly escaped a hair disaster by pinning up one side of my hair that did not twist out well.  When I walked through the front door, my sister called me curly sue...I'll take it!

Night Hair: Jumbo Twists

I'm working on coming up with a night time routine since I don't have a solid one at the current moment.  Tonight, I applied castor oil to my scalp, used water and a comb to detangle, and used my homemade shea butter to make 13 jumbo two strand twists.  It took me about 45mins to complete it.  I definitely want to cut that time down to at least 30mins. This is the first time doing an actual night routine so I'll continue to find new/faster ways to do it.

Weekend Hair: Flat Twist Out

It's been a while since I've shared what my hair has been up to lately so let me up date you.  I first gave myself some two strand flat twists last Tuesday during my spring break.  I wore that protective style for the whole week and if I had to go somewhere, I just threw a beanie on like so...
I continued to wear the twists until Friday, when I made my trip to my old school.  That day I wore the twistout for the first day.  It was really nice compared to other flat twists outs that I've done.  I only took pics of my hair on the first day of the twistout.  I wore it for a total of two days, before putting it in a puff today.  Anyways, the following are pics of my two strand flat twist out on the first day.

Nails of the Week: Green Apple Psycho

Although it still remains to snow, Spring has finally arrived.  So this week I decided to flaunt some fun spring inspired nail polish.  It is called Innocent by Sinful Colors.  It's the same color as the green apple I'm holding in the picture, and for all the Psych fans out there, it's also similar to the green theme they have going on.  Speaking of Psych, they will be airing their 100th episode this Wednesday on USA so check your local listings and hold on to your pineapples!

Castor Oil Challenge Update: Day 20

So this is the huge applicator bottle I have to mix my castor oil, grapeseed oil, and coconut oil in. When I filled it up, It amounted to 1.5oz.  I've used it 4times on my whole head and now its only slightly below the 1.5 mark. So a little goes a long way. In addition to using the castor oil this way to apply on my scalp, I have also been moisturizing my hair with my homemade whipped Shea butter.  I mixed it with castor oil so that should count right? Anyways, I do see a difference in my hair so far. It's more moisturized than usual.  As far as length, I have seen signs of more growth than usual too.  Then again, I've never taken care of my hair this much.  This challenge has been going well so far.

YouTube Special: Wavy Shea Butter Twistout

Video of how I did my twistout for the Alvin Ailey Performance below!

Hair of the Day: Protective Flat Twists

Since I washed my hair last night, and I'm on spring break, I figured now is a good time to do a quick protective style.  I used some water to aide in detangling and African Pride Shea Butter Miracle on each twist I did.  It was pretty simple and I ended up with 11 twists total and I did it while watching Friday After Next so the time flew by (it probably took about 20mins).
